Continuing their vigorous curling tradition, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Crusaders walked off the ice today with three Region of Peel curling championships.
“Our tradition is very strong,” said Carmel head coach Larry Young. “We’ve now won 11 championships in the past six years.”
Held at the Brampton Curling Club, Carmel won their third senior boys’ championship defeating St. Martin Mustangs 9-5.
“We lost last year in the semi-finals,” said Carmel skip John Farmer. “But this year, it feels really good to win especially in our graduating year.”
Not to be outdone, the senior girls’ team cruised to a 14-3 victory over Loyola Warriors winning their fourth title.
“We worked really hard,” said Carmel skip Melanie Schoettler. “We made some really good shots in the first two ends.”
In the senior mixed final, Carmel topped back-to-back champions, Meadowvale Falcons 5-3.
“It was a hard fought effort from the whole team,” said Carmel skip Chis Schoettler. “Meadowvale had a strong team but we came through in the end.”
Unable to complete the sweep, Carmel lost to Mississauga Lions in the junior mixed final 6-3.
“I feel great for the kids, especially for the senior teams because this was their last chance to win,” said Young. “Some of these kids have been on the program for four years and their hard work paid off.”
In the junior girls’ final, St. Martin blanked Loyola 11-0.
“We worked really hard from the beginning,” said St. Martin skip Chevonne Cloutier. “With four of us in grade nine, we really came together.”
In the junior boys’ final, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Bulldogs squeaked by St. Martin 6-4.
“It was an all around effort from the entire team,” said Gonzaga’s Jesse Orozco. “The match came right down to the end and we’re just happy we came out on top.”
In the open boys’ final, St. Martin lost 11-4 to Notre Dame Knights.
