Blue Mass honours police, firefighters

Members of the 13 Knights of Columbus chapters in Mississauga will hold a blue mass in honour of local police, firefighters, paramedics, military personnel and veterans on Nov. 3.
“The name of this special mass comes from the traditional blue colour of the uniforms worn by these men and women,” says Ray Bechard of the Knights of Columbus, a service council associated with the Catholic church.
The first Blue Mass was held Sept. 29, 1934 when 1,100 police and firemen, dressed in blue uniforms, marched into St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. It has become a tradition throughout North America ever since.
The annual Mississauga event this year will also take place at a St. Patrick’s Church, the one at 921 Flagship Dr. in Mississauga. The Pipe & Drum Band, and the 4th degree Knights honour guard will lead the procession into the church.
The mass begins at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be served in the church hall following the service.
