Dear Editor:
Re: Lake Wabukayne oil spill.
It seems clear in most cases that this kind of disaster can easily be prevented, if community members are aware of the issue. Urgent attention needs to be directed towards community members about the issue of dumping dangerous and toxic wastes into our sewers.
Since Mississauga is a very suburban city, the preservation of wildlife is crucial. Further government regulations need be handed down in order to preserve the ecosystems so that destruction to the environment in the near future can be prevented. Wildlife is very vulnerable to devastation, so we as a community need to push the government to mandate new regulations.
Everyday more chemicals are entering our surrounding lakes and streams, which cause wildlife to suffer from our actions. If members of the community keep pouring toxic liquids into the sewers, the nearby lakes and streams will be contaminated from these liquids. This water not only affects surrounding wildlife but pollutes our source of drinking water as well.
Disposing the toxic chemicals properly by contacting the Hazardous Waste Management facility can help reduce the effects on the environment. If you see your neighbour pour certain toxic chemicals into the sewer, confront them about the consequences of such an action.
We have seen the devastation animals go through when they intake these chemicals into their system. Be aware of the issue and tell surrounding neighbours to dispose toxic chemicals properly instead of doing it the easy way.
