Girl hit by truck in her new neighbourhood

A seven-year-old girl who moved to Toronto from Mississauga just seven months ago was struck and killed by a truck yesterday afternoon as she rode her bike around her new neighbourhood.
Christopher Jones cradled his daughter in his arms as she gasped for breath, begging her not to die.
Victoria Jones, who her grandmother called Mrs. Queen, was hit by a construction truck around 12:45 p.m. while crossing Bay Mills Blvd., near Warden and Sheppard Aves.
“Please Victoria. Stay awake. Stay awake,” he said, as the girl’s mother, Megan Pettit, sprinted outside in a housecoat. She had been in the shower when her eldest son – one of six children – ran inside.
City of Toronto spokesperson Francine Antonio said she couldn't confirm speculation the truck that hit Victoria was driven by a City of Toronto worker.
A makeshift shrine was erected at the scene, where strangers came to lay flowers and small stuffed animals throughout the afternoon.
The Joneses moved to Bay Mills Blvd. from Mississauga just before Christmas. They live on Eaglestone Rd. across from a school where Victoria frequently played. She and her siblings often walked the dog to the school’s track.
Police say it’s early in the investigation and charges are pending. Police are looking for witnesses.
