Travel pays off for soccer star

When it comes to playing soccer, Adrianna Gallo doesn’t mind putting in the travel miles.
The 18-year-old striker lives in Niagara Falls, where she helped the Saint Paul High School team win a provincial championship last year, and played with the Mississauga Dixie Saints — and now she’s moving further afield.
Thanks to her four years with Dixie, Gallo has won a soccer scholarship to the University of Kentucky, some nine hours drive from her home.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Wildcats won the South Eastern Conference in 2006 and went to the NCAA tournament.
All 16 players on last year’s Dixie team were offered scholarships to American schools, although a few have decided to stay in Canada. They include Mississauga’s Jonelle Filigno, the youngest player on Canada’s national team, who has committed to Rutgers University.
