Alleged abuse

Dear Editor:
Re: “Police probe more claims of elder abuse,” The News, Sept. 5 edition.
Thank you for exposing to your readers the alleged assault on an 84-year-old resident at Malton Village Long-Term Care Centre. Without your report, families, caregivers and other residents would have been none the wiser because it seems every effort had been made to deliberately keep everyone in the dark.
The fact that the victim was unable to communicate made the act even more deplorable. That no one reported her injuries over a four-day period is unforgivable. During that time, she would have been seen by three different nurses and a minimum of five personal support workers (PSWs) each day. They would have dressed and undressed her, provided personal hygiene care, and assisted her at meal times. Yet no one noticed her bruised head, face, arm and wrist?
An internal investigation is not likely to uncover anything: nothing less than an independent outside investigator is required. If the investigation is thorough, perhaps then and only then will answers be found.
