Retailer pulls plastics from shelves

Wee-Go Glass Bottles . Wee-Go Glass Bottles out of Sausalito, California boast safe, developmentally-appropriate and eco-friendly baby products.
While retailers await a ruling by Health Canada on the safety of products containing bisphenol A (BPA), Wal-Mart Canada has announced it is stopping sale of a number of baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, food containers and water bottles containing the substance.
"For many months, we've heard loudly and clearly from customers committed to buying BPA-free products, particularly in the baby aisles," said Andrew
Pelletier, Wal-Mart Canada's vice president of corporate affairs in a press release this morning.
"Regardless of the expected scientific results, we have responded to this consumer demand with an increased variety of BPA-free products," he said. "And, although we are removing items from our shelves today, we're well stocked for the future with safe alternatives."
Rumours that Health Canada would move to become the first country to officially declare biosphenol A as dangerous have filled the press this week, but no official announcement has yet been made.
The synthetic chemical is widely-used in a variety of plastic products and is suspected to leach into foods and liquids which are ingested from those products. Studies have linked biosphenol to breast and prostate cancer and the early onset of puberty.
Wal-Mart Canada has its head offices at Erin Mills Pkwy. and Argentia Rd. in Mississauga. It operates 299 stores nation-wide serving about a million people a day.
