A program aimed at encouraging African-Canadian youth in the Malton area to remain in school has received a $264,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant.
More than two dozen organizations in the Peel/Halton region received $2.24 million in financial support in the latest round of funding.
The Peel groups include:
• The Black Community Action Network of Peel: $75,000 over one year for program costs to undertake a survey and study
• Gateway Centre for New Canadians: $50,000 over one year for renovations to create an indoor basketball and athletic court
• Get Active Mississauga: $271,400 over four years to support a program which aims to get local residents more physically active
• Labour Community Services of Peel: $150,000 over three years for services that will help reduce workers’ income vulnerability
• Mississauga Swimming: $64,400 over one year to purchase electronic timing and computer equipment
• Partners for Helping at Risk Youth in Peel: $264,000 over four years for a program aimed at encouraging young people to remain in school and reduce the incidence of school suspensions among African-Canadian youth in Malton
• Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse: $215,000 over four years to conduct an information and education campaign on violence against women in Peel
• Peel Lunch and After School Program: $60,000 over two years to support a part-time space facilitator
• Region of Peel & Credit River Watershed Natural Areas Inventory: $197,700 over four years toward the development of a natural areas inventory for the Credit River watershed
• Tecumseh Tennis Club: $35,600 over one year to repair a tennis court
• Vancliffen Arts Foundation: $5,000 over six months to deliver a dance education program for young dancers and dance teachers in the Region of Peel
• White Oaks Park Tennis Club: $9,000 over one year to rebuild a tennis practice wall that will improve safety and provide more practice and skill development opportunities for the club’s 1,000 members
