PERTH - Tom Burns was glad that the National Hockey League strike went as long as it did.
The owner of Burns’ Jewellers had placed a bet that there would be no hockey in the latter of half of 2012.
“I made it by six days,” Burns said with elation, since the money he collected on that bet then went towards the $2,129 he donated on Tuesday, Feb. 12 to the Perth splash pad committee. As of that date, $11,600 had been raised, including money from the local Bank of Montreal branch.
Burns’ money, along with collecting on hockey bets, came from likes on his Facebook page, and money raised at his annual Christmas party.
Burns donated the cheque to Erin Borthwick, Sue Doran and Riq Turner at Perth town hall last week.
With another big donation last week, Borthwick reported that the committee was only $4,000 away from its goal.
