The Kanata Lakes Community Association is preparing to host its annual Winterfest event on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Whalen Park.
The celebration aims to offer residents a break from the winter blues.
“February is a long month in the winter and that’s why we planned the event for the coming weekend,” said association president Matt Muirhead. “Among the things that we do is try to build a stronger community so we hold events just like this one.”
Hay rides, face painting, snowshoe competitions, skating at the park’s rink and a tug-of-war with local firefighters will offer entertainment for the whole family.
“I think it will be an exciting event,” said Muirhead.
There will be free hot chocolate and hot apple cider, along with snacks and treats for members of the community association. Families and individuals can also register to join at Winterfest for $10. All membership funds are funneled back into the community.
“(We are) going to donate a portion of funds to the Kanata Food Cupboard as well,” said Muirhead, adding people can bring donations of juice boxes and non-perishable items suitable for children’s lunches that the association will deliver to the food cupboard.
The festival will take place at Whalen Park, 4111 Kanata Ave., beside All Saints Catholic High School from 1 to 3 p.m.
