STITTSVILLE - A new “Cardio Mix” fitness
program is being offered at Sacred
Heart High
School in Stittsville in the general interest
program being offered by the Continuing Education Department of the Ottawa Catholic
School Board.
This aerobic program will
include actions to get the heart working. There will also be low and high
impact options covering all fitness levels. The program will include 20 minutes
of core strengthening and stretching under the guidance of instructor Cathy
Nolan.
The eight week program will
be offered at Sacred Heart starting on Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. It
will also be offered during the spring offerings, starting on Tuesday, April 20
from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Or, if you don’t like the
sound of the “Cardio Mix” program, think about trying out Zumba, an exciting
new trend in fitness workouts. This is a fun and easy class, using dance steps
from salsa, merengue and other well known music. All that is needed is a pair
of running shoes, some water and your basic rhythm.
This Zumba program will be
offered at Sacred Heart on Tuesdays starting on Feb. 2, running from 8 p.m. to
9 p.m. In the spring, it will be offered at Sacred Heart on Tuesdays starting
on April 20, also from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Other programs being offered
by the Continuing Education Department at Sacred Heart
High School in the
upcoming winter and spring sessions include conversational French, golf,
babysitting, soft pastels art, ballroom dancing and Microsoft Office, a computer
program.
Very basic conversation
French will be offered at Sacred Heart for both the winter and spring programs.
This course will introduce
and familiarize a person with the phonetics of the French language and will
teach the basic essential vocabulary such as colours, days and seasons. It will
also include very basic sentence structures, enabling a person to introduce
themselves and to be able to ask and give some basic information in French.
Both English and French will be used as the language of instruction. The course
will be offered at Sacred Heart starting on Tuesday, Feb. 2, running from 7
p.m. to 9 p.m. for eight weeks.
The spring program, also
eight weeks in duration, will begin on Thursday, April 22, also running from 7
p.m. to 9 p.m.
A golf instruction program at
two levels, beginner and intermediate, is being offered at Sacred Heart in the
winter program.
The beginner lesson package
will be offered fox six weeks from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting on Tuesday,
Feb. 2. This beginner course will cover such topics as golf equipment, rules,
etiquette, club selection and the fundaments including swing motion, chipping
and putting.
The intermediate lesson
package will be offered at Sacred Heart for six weeks from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
on Tuesdays, starting on Feb. 2. This intermediate level course will deal with
the golf swing in detail.
For youth, there will be a
Red Cross babysitting course offered at Sacred Heart. This five week course
will be offered on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting on Feb. 2 and on Feb.
4. It will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m..
It will also be offered in
the spring program, again for five weeks starting on either Tuesday, April 20
or Thursday, April 22.
The purpose of this Red Cross
babysitting course is to teach potential babysitters the basics of child care
and in particular child safety. Topics include the responsibilities of the
sitter, the basics of first aid, accident prevention and fire safety. The
course is for those aged 11 to 14 years old. A certificate is issued upon
successful completion of the course including attendance at all five classes.
A course in soft pastels art
is being offered at Sacred Heart for eight weeks starting on Tuesday, Feb. 2,
running from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Instructor Janet Knowles will
introduce participants to the many possibilities of soft pastels. This will
include creating different effects such as layering, blending, feathering and
scumbling. Step by step instruction will be given on how to use soft pastels
and the tools used for this art. Those participating will create soft pastel
paintings from still life setups or photos.
Ballroom dancing classes will
be offered at Sacred Heart for the winter program.
An eight week level one ballroom dancing class will be
offered on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting on Feb. 25. This class will
involve the basics of ballroom dancing including slow waltz, triple swing, cha
cha, rumba, fox trot and merengue.
An eight week level two
ballroom dancing class will be offered at Sacred Heart on Thursdays from 8 p.m.
to 9 p.m. starting on Feb. 25. This class will add to the dances covered in the
level one class. There will also be an introduction to samba.
A ballroom dancing refresher
class for levels 3 to 5 will be offered at Sacred Heart on Thursdays from 9
p.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on Feb. 25 and running for eight weeks. This will be
a refresher class going through the steps learned in waltz, fox trot and tango
from level 3 to 5 classes. Those taking this refresher class must have taken at
least a level 3 ballroom dancing class previously.
A computer course dealing
with the Microsoft Office Professional suite will be held at Sacred Heart. A
version 2000 course will be offered at Sacred Heart on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m.
to 9 p.m. beginning on Feb. 2 and running for six weeks. The spring course will
begin on Tuesday, April 20 and run for six weeks.
Those taking this computer
course must have taken a level 1 Windows course or its equivalent and have the
necessary keyboarding skills. This course will teach the fundamental skills
involved in using the Microsoft Office Professional Suite program including an
introduction to the program’s three major applications, Word, Excel and
PowerPoint.
Besides these winter and
spring program offerings, a tennis camp will be held at Sacred Heart during the
March Break (March 15-19).
This National Tennis Camp is
for those aged 6 to 14 years old. It will consist of three to four hours of
tennis per day, with campers learning the fundamentals of tennis. The program will
also involve swimming, a fun Olympics, basketball, Ultimate Frisbee and other
activities. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
