12-year-old in critical condition after collapse

Student needs shock from defibrillator

NEPEAN - A 12-year-old girl was treated with a shock from a defibrillator by Ottawa paramedics after she collapsed at a Nepean school this morning, Jan. 22.

The elementary school is located in the Meadowlands and Viewmount area.

Paramedic received a call shortly after 9 a.m. after school staff saw the 12 year-old female student collapse in the school’s hallway. They immediately began CPR and called 911.

When paramedics arrived, they delivered one shock and found a pulse in the student. They also inserted a breathing tube.

On arrival at hospital, the girl was struggling to breathe on her own and was beginning to move. She is in critical condition in hospital.

Paramedics are highlighting the work of school staff in beginning CPR immediately until arrival of paramedics five minutes after the 911 call was received.
