Seeing fisher on Arnprior trail was a thrill

Dogs not allowed on the Macnamara trails

Fisher treed. A fisher in a tree along the Macnamara Trail in Arnprior didn’t appear happy that Russell Corbett was taking his photograph. Russell Corbett

Mammals of Ontario state: “For the lucky naturalist, meeting a fisher is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Well, we certainly had that opportunity and then some.

To be able to photography this elusive predator within the town of Arnprior was a thrill.

Its main diet of porcupine, squirrels, rabbits, muskrat and grouse may include domestic cats and dogs.

With natural forested areas such as McNamara trails and old growth Gilles Grove and a rebound of the numbers of fishers, it’s not surprising to witness these amazing animals of the weasel family.

On the topic of domestic dogs and cats, the McNamara Field Naturalist organization wishes to remind the public that dogs are not permitted on the McNamara trail network, and with the presence of such a predator, this is added incentive to keep dogs and cats out of that trail network.

It is natural for dogs, should they pick up an animal scent, to charge off causing stress for the animal and the dog owner alike, when their dog gets lost.
