When the Guelph Gryphons host the Western Mustangs in Saturday’s 100th edition of the Yates Cup, a handful of Mississaugans will have a say in determining the outcome.
The Yates Cup is the oldest continuously awarded football trophy in North America, dating back to 1898, and six Mississaugans will be on the field when they kick things off at 1 p.m.
Mississaugans suiting up for the hometown Gryphons include defensive back Jamie Shaw, running back Matthew Rosetti and offensive lineman Andrew Crosby.
Both Shaw, a Woodlands graduate, and Crosby, an Erindale grad, also played for the Mississauga Warriors. Meanwhile, Rossetti, attended St. Michael’s College.
Shaw, a three-year veteran, has been a jack of all trades this season, returning kickoffs, playing defensive back and wide receiver, and even getting a chance to throw the ball.
Lining up for the Mustangs will be linebacker Jason Kosec (Lorne Park), defensive back Richard Lewis (Warriors) and defensive lineman Christopher Greaves (St. Francis Xavier).
Kosec has made 35 tackles in six games this season while recording two sacks and an interception, while Greaves contributed a fumble recovery in the semi-final victory.
The winner of the OUA final will go on to meet the Western Canadian champion in the Mitchell Bowl.
