The St. John Catholic High School football teams made history as the junior and senior boys teams claimed county cups.
"We made history today," said junior coach Dominic Marando, as the boys huddled under the goal posts for a team shot following their 22-20 win over the Arnprior Redmen.
"Two teams, one program, two championships. The record may be equaled, but it will never be surpassed. We're going to enjoy that."
Marando was confident in his young proteges despite the tough pressure from Arnprior. The teams battled back and forth with the lead going into the final quarter.
"These kids have been so resilient all season long. We've been down and we've just come back game after game after game and you know what, never" did he think they were going to lose it today.
Last week, the juniors beat Carleton Place 14-12 and CP scored a TD with three seconds to go and the coach said the whole time he wasn't the least bit worried.
"That's a great team right there," he added, talking about Arnprior. "They're well coached, both games we have played against them have been real close. It could have gone either way."
In the background, the senior boys could be seen cheering on their younger counterparts, as they disembarked from the bus carrying their own county cup after defeating the Almonte Thunder in the final 30 seconds of the game, 12-10.
