The Canadians took two wins from the Smiths Falls Bears over
the weekend.
Carleton Place
travelled to Smiths
Falls on Nov. 20 to give
the Bears a 5-0 drubbing. They followed it up with a 5-3 victory at home on
Nov. 21.
It looked like the Bears were out for revenge on Saturday
night in front of a big crowd in Carleton
Place.
The Bears’ Peter Ryan scored two powerplay goals before the
midway point of the second period. While the Canadians were getting lots of
good chances, they weren’t able to score.
That is until Zach Allen put Carleton Place on the board.
The Canadians would score twice more before the period ended
with goals by Mitch Melanson and Luke Martin.
The rally would end with a shorthanded goal by the Bears’ Jonathan
Milley.
With the game tied 3-3 and about 10 minutes left in the
match, the Canadians’ Aaron MacCosham
got the go-ahead goal.
The already physical
game was turned up a notch on the intensity meter.
As the clock wound
down, the Bears’ pulled George Grammenopoulos. But Smiths
Falls couldn’t set up an
effective attack, allowing a shot on the empty net that was blocked.
With less than a
minute left in the game, the Canadians broke out of their zone and Richard
Stethem was able to put the icing on the cake for the 5-3 final.
Scott Shackell faced
26 shots on the night. The Canadians had 23 shots.
Canadians 5, Bears 0
While the Bears were
within grasp of a win throughout the Saturday night game, the same couldn’t be
said for Friday.
Shackell earned his
shutout and first-star honours in the 5-0 win, turning aside 35 shots.
Zack Rodier scored
two goals for the Canadians before Martin found the net and then Stetham scored
the final two.
