Early goal not enough for Canadians

Cornwall Colts beat Canadians 4-1

CARLETON PLACE -- The Junior A Canadians wasted no time getting on the board Saturday night, but it wasn’t enough to beat the hot Cornwall Colts.

Cornwall took a hooking penalty seconds into the game and Carleton Place’s Rusty Hafner scored the home team’s only goal of the night.

The Canadians held the lead throughout the period and managed to keep the pressure on Cornwall.

The Canadians started the second frame killing a penalty after Samuel Coyne took a slashing call in the last second of the opening period. But the Colts couldn’t get past goalie Morgan Barr until about midway through the period during another power play.

After some pretty passing, it was Kevin Cole who put Cornwall on the board.

There were good chances for both sides as Carleton Place pressed the visitors who arrived in town with a 6-and-1 record.

In the dying minutes of the period, a scuffle broke out after the Canadians fired the puck into the Colts’ net after the whistle.

The Canadians’ Donovan Gardiner was given a roughing after the whistle penalty and 10 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Colts’ Drew Henry also went to the box to serve out penalties for roughing, high sticking and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Though the Canadians had the man advantage it was the Colts who capitalized.

Jacob Laliberte grabbed the loose puck on the boards at mid-ice and flew down the ice as two Canadians tried to catch up. They couldn’t and Laliberte scored with a second left on the clock.

As the Canadians fought to tie the game in the third period, they took a penalty for too many men on the ice. Before that was up, they took another for holding.

A patient Laliberte found the net from the slot during the power play and put the Colts ahead 3-1 with less than three minutes left in the game.

Carleton Place pulled Barr, but the move backfired as Philip Taus sailed the puck into the empty net for a 4-1 final.

Cornwall outshot Carleton Place 35-23.

The Canadians play Friday night in Hawkesbury and then Sunday in Nepean.
