Richard Stethem’s shootout goal was the Canadians’ game winner in a close-fought battle against the Grads.

Carleton Place took on Cumberland at the Central Jr. A league’s Winter Showcase in Kemptville on Dec. 18.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie with both goals being scored in the first period of play.

Zach Allen scored the lone regulation goal for the Canadians with assists from Ryan Lowe and Robbie Lepine in the opening minute of play.

The Grads would even the score with about five minutes left in first period.

The next two periods would go scoreless with neither team recording any shots on net.

In the third period, the Grads would fire 24 shots at Carleton Place’s Scott Shackell. The Canadians would get 16 shots of their own.

In overtime, the Grads would get the puck on net just three times compared to the Canadians’ four.

It would take six rounds of shootout play to decide a winner.

The Grads’ shooters Mathieu Ouellette, Michael Borkowski, Stephen Farrell and Mitchell Gallant all failed to score. The Canadians’ Lepine, Brock Plouffe, Zach Rodier and Samuel Coyne couldn’t beat Cumberland’s Adam Laderoute.

Jason McCarthy scored for the Grads, but Tyler Kotlarz answered with his own goal.

When the Grads’ Greg Sartoretto failed to score, it was all up to Stethem who didn’t fail his teammates.

Cumberland would outshoot Carleton Place 37-30, excluding the shootout.

Shackell took first-star honours and Stetham was named the third-star of the afternoon game.

The Canadians play Gloucester Dec. 19 in Kemptville at 5 p.m.
