The Carleton Place Canadians took one win from two weekend
matches against the Smiths Falls Bears.
Home rink advantage may have played a role, with the Bears
winning 4-3 in Smiths
Falls and the Canadians
winning 3-2 in Carleton Place.
On Sunday, the Canadians opened the scoring with Ryan Lowe getting the unassisted goal early
in the first period.
The Bears quickly
answered with a shorthanded goal from Eric Carlson.
Just before the horn
sounded, the Canadians would take the lead after a powerplay goal from Donovan
Gardiner. The point shot looked like it might have been tipped as it
flew through the slot.
The Bears would get a breakaway soon after, but Greg
Magalhaes was hauled down giving the Bears a penalty shot.
Canadians’ goaltender Scott Shackell stood his ground
forcing Magalhaes to fire the puck high over the net.
Both teams would trade powerplay goals in the second period.
The Canadians struck first with a goal by Rusty Hafner who patiently waited for
the crowd in front of the net to clear before finding the net. He had help from
Mitch Melanson and Brock Plouffe.
Four minutes later the Bears’ Olivier Charette scored with assists from Matt Burns and Trevor Packard.
With no scoring in the third period, the Bears would pull
their goalie in the final minute in a last ditch attempt to tie. They couldn’t
keep possession and failed to find the tying goal.
The Canadians would outshoot the Bears 34-28.
Late rally not enough
On Friday night in Smiths Falls,
a late game rally came up short for the Canadians.
Down 4-0 going into the third period, Carleton Place finally got on the board
about five minutes in.
Kyle Phillips
would get the goal with assists from Melanson and Robbie Lepine.
Seconds later the Canadians would strike again.
Aaron MacCosham and Zach Allen would set up Zach Farris for the goal.
Brock Plouffe then got
a powerplay goal with an assist from Melanson to pull within one.
But that’s as close as the Canadians would get, taking the
4-3 loss.
The Canadians outshot the Bears 35-26.
What’s next
The Canadians play Feb. 5 in Kemptville and then host the
73’s in Carleton Place
on Feb. 6.
