Runners enjoy a beautiful Sunday in the mud

Sunday afternoon warriors

Mud bath. Close to 4,000 runners competed in the Spartan Race at Camp Fortune last Sunday. A number of teams from the city and the Valley tested their mettle at the Spartan Race held at Camp Fortune July 3.
The five-kilometre event resembled a boot camp as competitors challenged the terrain of Camp Fortune, plus a number of obstacles along the way.
Combatants had to contend with mud to run through, barbed wire to crawl under, fire to leap over and guys wielding sticks to dodge.
There were about 3,700 competitors registered for Sunday’s race, which included online and on-site registrations.
One Renfrew team consisted of Katie MacDonald, Dan MacDonald, Hillary MacMillan, Amy D’Aoust, Charlene Nolan and Hughie Nolan.
Charlene Nolan said she and her teammates enjoyed the experience.
“It was a tough muddy race that pushed you to your limits,” Nolan noted
“This race was designed to test your resilience, strength, stamina and the ability to laugh in the face of adversity.
“I can’t wait to do it all again next year.”
Proceeds from the Camp Fortune event, and all Ontario Spartan Races benefit Soldier On, a ski program for disabled soldiers.
The Camp Fortune Spartan Race cost participants $40 to enter, and most finished the day happier than a pig in mud.
